1. Why dictate prompts with Dropline
It works where your AI tools are. ChatGPT and Claude in the browser or their desktop apps, Cursor's chat, VS Code, a terminal running a coding agent: if there's a text field, Dropline can type into it. You don't need a separate voice feature in each tool.
Your thinking out loud becomes a clear prompt. Fillers come out. When you change your mind mid-sentence, only the final version is typed. Dropline doesn't add instructions of its own or reword you; it makes the smallest edits that turn speech into writing.
Code terms stay exact. In code editors, Dropline only takes out the fillers: identifiers, paths and commands stay exactly as you said them. Add terms to your dictionary, and Dropline also checks the names on your screen while you dictate, so "use effect" can come out as useEffect.
Terminals are safe. In a terminal, dictated text is always a single line. A stray Return never runs a command.
2. What it looks like
In Claude or ChatGPT:
| You say | Dropline types |
|---|---|
| "um so I'm writing a cover letter for a, uh, product designer role, keep it under three hundred words, no wait, two hundred and fifty, and make it sound warm but not cheesy" | I'm writing a cover letter for a product designer role. Keep it under 250 words, and make it sound warm but not cheesy. |
In Cursor, with useEffect on screen:
| You say | Dropline types |
|---|---|
| "um the use effect in this file runs on every render, can you make it only run when the user ID changes" | The useEffect in this file runs on every render. Can you make it only run when the user ID changes? |
In a terminal, talking to a coding agent:
| You say | Dropline types |
|---|---|
| "um run the tests and, uh, fix whatever fails, but don't touch the migrations" | Run the tests and fix whatever fails, but don't touch the migrations. |

4. When something else is the better choice
- Your AI tool's own voice mode is better if you want a spoken conversation and spoken answers, not a typed prompt you can review.
- Superwhisper is better if you need to dictate offline or keep audio on your machine.
- Wispr Flow is better if you also dictate prompts on your phone.
- Dropline needs an internet connection, an Apple silicon Mac or Windows 10/11, and its Windows app is a beta.
5. Tips for spoken prompts
- Say the goal first, then the details. "I want X. Here's the context. Don't do Y."
- Correct yourself freely. "Three hundred words, no wait, two fifty" is typed as 250 words.
- Use hands-free mode for long prompts. Tap the hotkey once, talk, tap again. Each recording can run up to 3 minutes.
- Edit by voice on a Mac. Select your draft, press left Option + left Shift, and say "make it shorter" or "turn this into a numbered list".
6. FAQ
Does Dropline work with ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor?
Yes. It types into any text field, so it works with their web and desktop apps, Cursor and other editors, and terminal-based agents.
Will Dropline change my prompt?
In Dictate, no. It removes fillers, applies your corrections, punctuates and formats numbers. It doesn't add or reword instructions.
Will it mangle code names?
In code editors only the fillers come out. Add project-specific names to your dictionary, and Dropline also checks the names on your screen.
What does it cost?
Free during the Preview, with no word limits during the Preview.
What's the hotkey?
Left Option on a Mac (tap or hold), Ctrl + Win on Windows (hold). Both can be changed in Settings.
